When Deep Purple performed at London's Paris Theatre on Lower Regent Street on March 9, 1972, they were at the definitive peak of their success, not to mention their creativity. In September 1971, their fifth album 'Fireball' reached number one in the UK charts, with their forthcoming album 'Machine Head', released in April 1972 and heading to the top of charts worldwide, waiting in the wings. Their song of the century "Smoke On The Water" had also already been recorded, based on this riff, which for generations has been one of the first obligatory riffs of every guitar student and is probably the most famous rock chord ever. Featuring Ian Gillan (voc), Ritchie Blackmore (git), Jon Lord (kb), Roger Clover (b) and Ian Paice (dr) - the legendary line-up of Deep Purple Mk. At the Paris Theater, Deep Purple didn't dwell on their past for long, but played nearly the entire "Machine Head" album, including "Smoke On The Water," "Highway Star," "Lazy" and "Space Truckin'." The only exceptions were "Strange Kind Of Woman", which at the time was only included on the US version of "Fireball", and a cover of Little Richard's "Lucille". However, Deep Purple's future was sealed in October 1972 when singer Ian Gillan announced his departure after fulfilling all his contractual obligations. By the time of the recording of "Who Do You Think We Are" (1973), the band was no longer in the studio and Gillan left the group in June 1973, with bassist Roger Clover packing his bags in July. When Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Purple in April 1975, the purple sheen of one of the best bands in rock history had already peeled off. Deep Purple's "In Concert '72" shines all the brighter on us today. An album that has earned cult status.
