Early, unreleased Bowie recordings from 1969 in a 1-LP box set! The series of releases of previously unreleased recordings for the 50th anniversary of David Bowie's first hit Space Oddity continues! Following the recent release of a box set of four singles, Spying Through A Keyhole and Clareville Grove Demos with three more singles comes The "Mercury" Demos, another treasure from the archive of early Bowie recordings. The album The "Mercury" Demos contains ten Bowie tracks recorded live on a Revox tape recorder in his apartment in the spring of 1969. Bowie was then accompanied by John "Hutch" Hutchinson on guitar and harmonica. The demo version of Space Oddity, which is included on the album and which is also included on the Sound & Vision box set, appears here for the first time in its true context. The other nine tracks on the album are previously unreleased. In addition to the Bowie originals, the recording also includes Roger Bunn's Life Is A Circus (which is also on Clareville Demos in an earlier demo version) and the Lesley Duncan Love Song, which Elton Johns later recorded for his Tumbleweed Connection album. Bowie's own Conversation Piece is billed as a "new song" and Janine features a 19-second short section sung to the tune of the Beatles' "Hey Jude". The session is a staple recording for the duo's then "Bowie & Hutch" setlist and was recorded to cassette at the request of Mercury Records' A&R label Calvin Mark Lee, who wanted to send the tracks to his boss Bob Reno. Both Calvin and Bob are featured throughout the 41-minute recording. These demos became the key to David's record deal with Mercury Records.
