By 1966, when the band was formed, Eric Clapton was already quite well known, having performed and recorded with the Yardbirds and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. But it was with Cream that Clapton became a worldwide superstar. The band broke away from traditional rock and roll songwriting and developed a whole new approach to rock music with long jams that was more influenced by improvisation and jazz. When their debut album Fresh Cream was released in 1966, it immediately became the standard by which all other bands of the time were measured.
