This exceptional release contains all of Baker's first recordings as a singer, recorded in five different studios in Los Angeles between October 1953 and July 1956. These recordings include Baker's debut versions of well-known hits such as My Funny Valentine, You Don't Know What Love Is and Let's Get Lost. These recordings reveal the endearing innocence and naiveté of Baker's vocal sound in his early twenties, at the start of his professional career, before the intense physical wear and tear and emotional turmoil caused (or exacerbated) by long-term drug addiction. Twenty of the twenty-four tracks included here feature Baker in a quartet with pianist Russ Freeman and various bassists (Carson Smith, Joe Mondragon, Jimmy Bond) and drummers (Bob Neel, Shelly Manne, Peter Littman, Lawrence Marable). The last four tracks on the CD, included here as bonus tracks, feature Baker and Freeman in a quartet with an over-the-top string section that also includes flutist Bud Shank and harpist Corky Hale.
