"I'd rather have years of constant success than just one hit album that everyone will constantly compare me to." Axel Rudi Pell should know. After all, his solo career has spanned nearly three decades. In the international hard rock world, Pell is a phenomenon. A musician who flies under the radar but is by no means invisible. An honest craftsman who learned his craft from the ground up. He doesn't know writer's block, he doesn't like to ride the waves. The old advertising classic applies to Pell, too: You know what you got. The follow-up to "Game Of Sins" (2016's #11 on the German charts) is called "Knights Call" and is the guitarist's 17th (in words: 17th!) studio album. This fact alone speaks for itself, as does the consistency with which he has been releasing albums since 1989. All of them, by the way, have been released by the same record label, SPV/Steamhammer, and have found more than 1.5 million buyers worldwide. But that is no reason to rest on this success. "Why should I stop?" asks a man in his 70s, and gives his answer, "As long as I can do what I enjoy most, I'm happy." In essence, Pell is living a life that others only dream of: he has made his hobby not only a profession, but also a calling. His passion drives him, constantly searching for a better chorus, a better bridge, a better solo, a better song. "Composing is like so many other things in life, you either know how to do it or you don't." He trusts not only himself, but also his German-American team around singer Johnny Gioeli and drummer Bobby Rondinelli. He counts his fans among them. "Direct feedback is important, Pell only in the studio would be boring." Axel Rudi Pell 2018 focuses on more groove, more melodies and more variety. The mix of medieval mysticism and fantasy folklore is still present, but there are little screws here and there.
