Vivaldi mastered the form of the concerto for two violins like few other composers of his time. He wrote most of them for the Ospedale della Pietà, where he was a music teacher. From 1723 he was contracted to deliver two concertos a month. This lasted until 1735. The double concertos became popular not only for their pedagogical qualities, but also for the spectacular effect provided by two soloists on the concert stage. For all their formal sameness, Vivaldi's concertos are strikingly different despite the demands of mass production; the six works presented here are a fine example of this.
