Andrew Hill is one of the most outstanding jazz pianists and composers. However, this deeply moving 1969 recording was not released until 2003, when it was finally released on CD thanks to the efforts of Blue Note archivist Michael Cuscun. Hill wrote all seven tracks on Passing Ships for an ensemble that included Woody Shaw and Dizzy Reece on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone, Joe Farrell on saxophones, flute and bass clarinet, Howard Johnson on tuba, Bob Northern on French horn, Ron Carter on bass and Lenny White on drums. The album Passing Ships matches Hill's best work and is released on vinyl for the first time on the Tone Poet label. The Tone Poet audiophile vinyl reissue series from Blue Note Records is produced by Joe Harley and features analog-only 180g audiophile vinyl reissues mastered from the original master tape in deluxe gatefold packaging. Mastering was done by Kevin Gray (Cohearent Audio) and the vinyl was produced at Record Technology Incorporated (RTI).
